This portable hard drive arrived from CBA Digital very quickly. I ordered on a Thursday afternoon and it arrived on the Saturday morning by parcel post. The unit is very compact (fractionally smaller than the new Western Digital Passport) and quite a stylish piece of kit. It feels substantially built and well put together, the rounded corners and glossy black inserts front and back keeping it from looking too industrial.

The case supplied was a soft black vinyl pouch rather than the `hard’ case suggested by the advertising photograph on this site and seemed quite cheap and nasty – the stitching came apart in a couple of places when I first put the unit in – having quickly fixed it myself I’m now quite fond of it – the vinyl is quite `squidgy’ (it’s really more like very thin memory foam) is close-fitting to the unit and actually offers a good degree of scratch and knock resistance. As the pouch is open one end, and the inlets/outlets on the unit are all at one end, the unit can be used without taking it out of its cover which I’ve found really practical in day-to-day use.

The unit reads and writes very quickly. I dragged-and-dropped a 16GB music folder onto it and it transferred it in about five and a half minutes. 200 photographs went across in less than a couple of minutes. The drive is SATA and runs at 5,400 rpm and is pre-formatted to FAT 32 (this is quite straightforward to change if you want to).

The One Touch Backup seems to work well. On opening, your computer hard drive and the portable hard drive contents are displayed side-by-side. It uses a check-box system so that you can choose exactly which folders/files/drives you would like to back up. Once you have chosen, all you need to do is to press the button on the end of the unit – you are then asked for confirmation – press the button a second time or mouse-click `yes’ and it’s all done. Drag-and-drop works fine too if you’d rather. You can of course use both.

Overall, I have found this unit to be excellent. I almost gave it 4 stars because of the case, but hey, it came with some protection straight out of the box – most don’t!

I have been using this external hard drive every day now since I’ve bought it a couple of months ago and have had no problems whatsoever. I simply plugged it in and the computer takes up to 30 secs or so (the first time) to recognise it and then I can quickly navigate through my folders. Copying files, folders etc onto it is also very easy.

I haven’t used the button on the side that aids you in copying into the hard drive because I always just save my work directly onto the hard drive. It has replaced the 2 USB sticks I had, but now I still have lots and lots of memory.

The wire that connects from the hard drive to the computer is very good and does not ever slip out, the cover it came with is great and has protected the shiny sides of the hard drive, especially since I just chuck it into my bag.

Overall, absolutely no problems with it and I think the cost is very reasonable for what you get.

I could not believe how quickly this was delivered, I ordered it on the tuesday night and it came on the thursday at about midday.

It might not be pocket sized, but it’s near enough there, and the way that it looks is very smart.

You have no need for a power cable as it draws power from directly from the usb port, so you have no need for a memory stick when you when you have one of these.

I initially bought this so I could upgrade my PS3 hard drive, just as a device to backup the data from the PS3 whilst I swaped out the HDD, and was quite happy when I found out that it was already formatted to FAT32. But the format can be changes to NTFS quite easily, and you are even given instructions on how to do so from the disk you recieve with it.

The only problem I had was some of the instructions for the one-touch-backup facility were in chinese and I could not understand how it worked.

Overall I would recomend this to anyone wanting a decent external HDD that is quick and easy to use. It’s excellent.
