Photokina 2012: Canon unveils super-light EOS 6D

Canon has revealed its newest DSLR, the EOS 6D. After months of EOS 5D X/5D Mark III/6D rumours and speculation, the camera is a similar size and weight to the EOS 60D, making it the world’s lightest DSLR to feature a full-frame CMOS sensor.

The 20.2 megapixel Canon EOS 6D is also the first Canon DSLR to feature Wi-Fi and GPS connectivity, for easy photo sharing. Photographers can upload images and videos to Facebook and YouTube, transfer files to external storage devices or the cloud, or print pictures with a Wi-Fi photo printer.

You can also use your smartphone to remotely adjust the camera’s shooting settings and focus, remotely trigger the shutter and view images, before viewing them on the camera’s own 3-inch high-res LCD screen with anti-glare.

Integrated GPS can tag photos with your location when they’re shot, and record your movements via a GPS logger and Map Utility software.

DLNA compatibility means you can view videos and images from your camera on your HD TV, too.

New sensor

The Canon EOS 6D boasts a newly designed 20.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor and an ISO range of 100-25,600 (extendable to 50-102,400) for shooting poster-sized images, even in low light. An 11-point AF system focuses right down to EV-3, the equivalent of moonlight.

DIGIC 5+ image processing offers a range of automatic modes and creative shooting features, alongside full manual controls and advanced features such as HDR mode, Multiple Exposure mode, silent drive mode and an electronic level for shooting straight horizons.

The Canon EOS 6D may be lightweight, at just 770g (1.7lbs), but it’s also tough, with a dust- and drip-proof, part-magnesium body.

The camera is also compatible with wide-angle EF lenses from 8mm to 800mm. A new BG-E13 battery grip offers double the number of shots, and takes AA batteries.

The Canon EOS 6D is priced at £1,799/$2,099.00 body only, or £2,519.99/$2,899 with an EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM kit lens. It will go on sale in December.
